Bigg’s (transient) killer whales cruise the shoreline, hunting for seals and other marine mammals. Humpback whales are also a common sight from spring to fall. Nestled at the entrance to Desolation Sound, Cortes Island lies at the doorstep of the breathtaking fjords that penetrate British Columbia’s wild coast. The island is situated at the northern end of the Salish Sea (Strait of Georgia), on Canada’s west coast, between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland. Cortes Island can be reached via seaplane from Victoria, Vancouver and Seattle or a 40-minute ferry ride from Quadra Island which in turn is accessed by a shorter 10-minute ferry crossing from the City of Campbell River on Vancouver Island. There are also water taxis from Campbell River.
